Submersible pump vs jet pump
A submersible pump sits down in the well and pushes water up. A jet pump sits above ground and pulls water up. Depth decides most of it.

How each works
Jet pumps work from the surface and suit shallower wells. Submersible pumps are lowered into the water and push it to the surface, which is why they are used on deep wells. The USGS has a general explainer on how wells work.[source]
Which do you have?
If you see a pump motor near the well or in a pump house with pipes coming from the well, you may have a jet pump. If nothing pump-shaped is above ground, the pump is down in the well. Tell the company which you see.
Switching types
Changing from one to the other depends on the well. A pump company can explain what fits.
If you have a jet pump
Jet pumps sit above ground, so they are easier to reach. They need protection from freezing and from sun and dust. If yours is losing prime or running without moving water, mention it. On a deeper well, the company may talk about whether a submersible would suit the well better.
Questions
Are jet pumps cheaper?
We do not publish prices. Ask the company to compare options for your well.
Can a jet pump work on a deep well?
Deep wells are generally served by submersibles. Ask the company about your well.
Do submersibles last longer?
It depends on the pump and conditions.
